WELCOME

Dear visitor, my name is Slav Varlakov. This web site presents my artwork.
I am a Ukrainian – born American, and a resident of Tokyo. My work is surrealistic. The images come from my subconscious and, therefore, do not always appear logical.

My original vocation was as an engraver in the jewelry industry, but now, using my goldsmith’s skills, I specialize in very small printed images – sometimes as small as postage stamps. With printing methods becoming ever more sophisticated the art of engraving is diminishing.

Engraving was established more than 500 years ago in Europe and was primarily used as a method of illustrating, for example, news-sheets. At that time it was not considered an art form although many artistic aspects, from the initial design all the way through the production process, were evident.

My intention is to present my work to as wide an audience as possible.
